The Best Woman - Shirley Brown, "Holding My Own"
Shirley Brown has a superb soulful voice which is mixed upfront on this new collection of sassy strutting soul and heartfelt ballads. When she wails it isn't acrobatics but is determined by the joy or pain in the lyrics. Takes a couple of spins to get into but ace tracks include the piano led ballad 'Walking or Crawling', the hands on hips defiance of 'Sweet lips, big hips'. The music is a mix of real instruments and unobtrusive programming. But most of all it is the voice, swooping, brimming with passion that shows up the bulk of the so called divas cluttering up the R'nB chart for the second raters they are.
